And what is our mode of operation?
We are an organization that focuses on strengthening information systems to improve data delivery and decision-making. We are part of the global HISP network, which originated from the University of Oslo and is known for developing and implementing DHIS2 (District Health Information Software 2) an open-source platform used for health data management.
Read MoreWhere did it originate from?
DHIS2 is an open-source Information Management System designed for data collection, analysis, reporting, and visualization in healthcare and other sectors. It was developed by the HISP (Health Information Systems Program) at the University of Oslo and is widely used in over 100 countries, including Nigeria.

The National Health Management Information System (NHMIS) is Nigeria’s official framework for collecting, managing, and reporting health data. It is overseen by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and plays a critical role in monitoring healthcare delivery, tracking diseases, and supporting policy decisions.

HISP Nigeria is Nigeria’s’ leading Informatics Institution. HISP was established in 2006 by a group of Social Scientists, Information Technology professionals. HISP was set up to drive the paradigm shift in health data and information management. Moving it from a data collection for reporting to an information for functional planning and management approach
This process involves regularly collecting data from various sources, such as healthcare facilities, schools and communities. It helps track trends, assess program effectiveness, and inform decision-making for better outcomes. Reporting ensures that the data is organized and shared with relevant stakeholders for timely action.
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) track the progress and effectiveness of health programs. Monitoring ensures activities are on track, while evaluation measures outcomes. Together, they provide insights for improving program performance and decision-making.
Disease surveillance involves monitoring and collecting data on health conditions to detect potential outbreaks. Timely response actions are then taken to control the spread and minimize impact. This system helps ensure public health safety and preparedness.
Our research and analysis involve gathering, studying, and interpreting information to generate insights. This helps identify trends, inform policies, and improve interventions. Evidence-based findings drive effective decision-making and enhance program outcomes.
HISP Nigeria is a regional leader (Anglophone Western Africa) in designing the conceptual framework of routine and survey databases. Our core experience is with the DHIS2, Postgresql, Access, Oracle, SPSS and Excel systems. HISP Nigeria led the design and deployment component of the first national health information system in Nigeria in 2006, and since 2011 HISP Nigeria has designed, deployed and managed a DHIS2 Nigeria instance on behalf of the ministry of health.
HISP has designed program and intervention evaluations for a broad range of national and international partners. HISP Nigeria undertook HMIS assessments for the groundbreaking PATHS2 project in five program states: Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, and for Khulisa of South Africa for programs spread around Nigeria. In between HISP has designed evaluation studies for the PRRINN project, THE TSHIP Project and several state governments
As database proliferation has become an issue, HISP Nigeria has developed strong capacity in operationalizing database interoperability. Ensuring that databases from differing designers and contexts can make seamless handshakes and provide the continuums of institutional information that most stakeholders often desire.
