The training was designed to enhance the capabilities of Nutrition Officers in applying updated nutrition indicators and data elements within the DHIS2 framework. It included hands-on sessions on data entry, data visualization, and the utilization of new tools for effective capturing and reporting of nutrition data.
Objectives
- Equip Nutrition Officers with knowledge on the latest nutrition indicators within the DHIS2
- Provide orientation on the newly introduced data elements in nutrition.
- Improve participants’ proficiency in the process of capturing and managing nutrition data.
Over the years, HISP has consistently provided technical support to both the Government and its partners in critical areas. One of such initiative is the State Training of Trainers (STOT) on Updated Nutrition Data Elements and Indicators within the National Health Management Information System (NHMIS), a key assignment executed by HISP. For this training, HISP NG deployed a technical team comprising two consultants, who facilitated the program. The team arrived in Calabar, Crossriver State, on October 24th and departed on October 26th, 2024.
During the training, participants were organized into five groups to foster collaboration and effective learning. The focus of the training was on the Updated Nutrition Data Elements and Indicators within the NHMIS, emphasizing the accurate recording and capturing of data crucial for monitoring nutrition, especially in relation to campaign data and NHMIS reporting. The objectives of the training were to:
- Equip Nutrition Officers with knowledge of the Updated Nutrition Indicators in DHIS2.
- Introduce participants to the new data elements in nutrition.
- Enhance participants’ understanding of the processes involved in capturing nutrition data.
The training included practical sessions aimed at improving the participants’ skills in using updated nutrition indicators and data elements within the DHIS2 framework. These sessions covered data entry, visualization, and the application of new tools for capturing and reporting nutrition data.
Additionally, the technical team assigned usernames and passwords to all participants, including State Officers, to facilitate access to the system and ensure the smooth implementation of the newly acquired skills.

To maintain the momentum and drive meaningful improvements in nutrition data management across Nigeria, all recommended actions will be implemented, continuous support will be provided, and adopt flexible scheduling.
This highlights the collaborative efforts and outcomes of the STOT, underscoring the steps taken to improve nutrition data management. It emphasizes the critical need for ongoing support and follow-up to ensure that the progress made during the training is sustained and further enhanced. Additionally, it is recommended that the lessons learned and best practices identified during the STOT be documented and shared across all regions to promote consistency and elevate the overall standard of nutrition data management nationwide.
