State Training of Trainers (STOT) on the Updated Nutrition Data Elements and Indicators for the National Health Management Information System (NHMIS). Niger State

A 3-Day State Training of Trainers (STOT) focused on the Updated Nutrition Data Elements and Indicators within the National Health Management Information System (NHMIS) was conducted from August 14th to 16th, 2024, at Yankees Hotel, Suleja, Niger State. The training was designed to enhance the capacity of Nutrition Officers at both the State and sub-national levels, with the goal of ensuring accurate reporting, documentation, and improved coordination of nutrition data.

Centered on the DHIS2 platform, the training had the following key objectives:

  • Equip Nutrition Officers with knowledge of the updated Nutrition indicators in DHIS2.
  • Introduce participants to the new data elements in Nutrition.
  • Strengthen participants’ understanding of the processes involved in capturing Nutrition Data.

To achieve these objectives, HISP employed a participatory and demonstration-based methodology. The training setup featured clustered seating, with each table assigned supportive facilitators to ensure effective learning and engagement.

The training was designed to enhance the capabilities of Nutrition Officers in applying updated nutrition indicators and data elements within the DHIS2 framework. It included hands-on sessions on data entry, data visualization, and the utilization of new tools for effective capturing and reporting of nutrition data.

Objectives

  • Equip Nutrition Officers with knowledge on the latest nutrition indicators within the DHIS2
  • Provide orientation on the newly introduced data elements in nutrition.

Improve participants’ proficiency in the process of capturing and managing nutrition data

Approach

The training employed a blend of theoretical and practical approaches. The theoretical component featured presentations and discussions to thoroughly cover the updated nutrition data elements and indicators. The practical sessions involved group exercises and step-by-step guidance on navigating DHIS2, including the use of data capture and visualization tools, as well as setting up dashboards. Participants engaged in hands-on practice with the data entry app and the Data Visualizer tool, thereby enhancing their understanding and skills.

The main focus was on:

  1. In-depth presentations on updated nutrition data elements and indicators.
  2. Training on the mobile data capture app and the Data Visualizer tool.
  3. Group exercises centered on data elements, indicators, and registers to reinforce practical application.

Interactive sessions for providing feedback, engaging in discussions, and offering suggestions.

The 3-Day State Training of Trainers (STOT) was highly effective in strengthening the capacity of Nutrition Officers. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical sessions, the training ensured that participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the updated tools and data elements.

Looking ahead, all the essential recommended actions will be implemented, continuous support provided, and adopt flexible scheduling to maintain the momentum and drive meaningful improvements in nutrition data management across Nigeria.
